The first mini tunnel boring machine for the HS2 line named « Lizzie »
Eiffage Kier Ferrovial BAM's first small tunnel boring machine (TBM) to be used on the HS2 high-speed rail project was named « Lizzie » by pupils at The Misbourne School in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.
During the visit to the construction site, the Year 8 students were able to meet the engineers in charge of the project to learn more about how the machine works, before witnessing the arrival of the tunnel boring machine, which is 8.9 m long and weighs 19 tonnes.
Coming soon : « Lizzie » is due to start digging a 300m long drainage tunnel near the northern entrance to the Chiltern Tunnel in South Heath in the next few weeks.
